Costco Kirkland's Pork Shoyu Ramen review

Costco Kirkland's Pork Shoyu Ramen review

I saw a lot of hate on social media regarding this ramen, and honestly, I did have second thoughts about buying it because of all those negative reviews. However, when I saw it in person, I really wanted to give it a chance and see whether it was really that bad… because, honestly, it doesn't look bad.

AND!!! I'm so glad I made that decision, because most of social media lied!!! 😂

It is so good!!

It isn't a traditional Japanese-style ramen, but it is a Japanese-style ramen with a Chinese influence, and I think this is where some of the negative reviews went wrong.

Unlike some shoyu ramen bases that can lean heavily into that salty, straightforward soy sauce flavour, this one has much more depth. It is the kind of ramen flavour you could find in a Yokohama Chinatown mom-and-pop shop.

Unlike a more traditional Japanese shoyu-based ramen with a more pronounced shoyu flavour, this broth is filled with ginger, chicken, onion, leek, garlic and scallion (spring onion) flavours.

If you're looking for a traditional, mild Japanese shoyu-based ramen, this probably isn't for you.

But if you're looking for a tasty Chinese-Japanese fusion-style ramen, then this is exactly what it is! :)

About the "authenticity" debate...

My biggest issue with some of the reviews that instantly docked points is the argument that it "isn't authentic."

I saw one review from someone who insisted that their family went on a seven-day trip to Tokyo and said this ramen tasted nothing like the ramen they had there.

Seriously… I think you didn't try enough ramen. 😂

Ramen isn't one single flavour or style. There are so many different regional and restaurant-specific variations, and some broths are thick and rich while others are light and clear. Some are heavily influenced by other cuisines, too.

I can completely understand if the flavour isn't for you — that's personal preference.

But please… don't come in saying something isn't "authentic" just because you were a tourist in a country for a week! >___<

Okay… enough ranting. 😂 Onto the actual product!

Tons of Asian Shiitake mushrooms!

The actual ramen

I liked it!

I hope they keep this around for a little while longer because it genuinely tastes good.

Despite its compact size, I found that it could easily serve 2–3 people, which was a pleasant surprise. It contains three whole marinated eggs cut in half and eight slices of Japanese chashu (チãƒĢマシãƒĨマ).

The broth contains chicken and shiitake mushroom broth, and there is A LOT of shiitake mushroom.

Actually… maybe too much shiitake mushroom. 😂

The broth also leans very heavily into ginger, which can be a good or bad thing depending on how much you like ginger. Personally, I think it works really well, especially now that it's autumn and the weather is getting slightly cooler.

The ginger produces more flavour and warmth than actual heat. It isn't spicy in the traditional sense, but you can definitely feel that warming quality from the ginger, which I really enjoyed as the weather started getting cooler.

The noodles are also chewy and on the thicker side, which I think works really well with this type of broth. They remind me of the thicker noodles I've had at ramen shops in Tokyo that serve richer, thicker broths. The noodles have enough substance to hold up to the broth instead of getting lost in it.

As for the saltiness… this definitely leans on the saltier side. In fact, it is probably saltier than the ramen you typically get in Canada and North America in general.

But it is that very Japanese kind of saltiness that comes with a richer, thicker broth. I'm used to it after living in Tokyo for years, but I can imagine someone who isn't accustomed to Japanese food finding it slightly overwhelming.

As I mentioned above, the broth is thick and coats the noodles really well. And while some people seem to associate thick broth with being "inauthentic," rich and thicker ramen broths absolutely exist in Japan.

For example, Nagi Ramen (凊らマめん) in Shinjuku and Shibuya specializes in Niboshi ramen (į…Ūåđēしらマめん), which uses dried sardines to create a much more concentrated and distinctive broth. Premium ramen shops can also charge a premium for these more complex broths.

So, no, this isn't trying to be a simple, traditional bowl of shoyu ramen — and I don't think it needs to be.

It's doing its own thing, and honestly, I like it.

Conclusion

Despite all the negative reviews I saw online, I'm really glad I gave this ramen a chance. It isn't the most traditional Japanese ramen I've ever had, but I don't think that is a fair criticism of what it is trying to be.

It's a hearty, rich, ginger-forward Japanese-style ramen with Chinese influences, lots of toppings, chewy thick noodles, and a surprisingly satisfying broth. It is saltier and more intensely flavoured than the ramen many North Americans may be accustomed to, but that is part of what makes this style of ramen so enjoyable to me.

If you go into it expecting a mild, traditional shoyu ramen, you might be disappointed. But if you approach it as a Chinese-Japanese fusion-style ramen with a rich broth, thicker chewy noodles, and lots of ginger, I think you'll appreciate it much more.

For me, this was one of those times when ignoring the social media reviews paid off. 😂

Kirkland's Cinnamon Danish Rolls short review

Cinnamon Danish Rolls

It has been a while since I saw a YouTube video raving about Kirkland's Cinnamon Danish Rolls (found at Costco). After eagerly waiting for them to arrive at my local Costco, I was finally able to get my hands on them!

Appearance:

When I first saw them, I must admit, I was a bit skeptical. The rolls didn't look as appetizing as I had imagined—they appeared slightly dry and looked unappetizing. Nevertheless, I decided to give them a try.

The pictures you see here don't do these cinnamon rolls any justice... they look small and regular-sized in the pictures... but in reality, they are bigger than the size of my palm.

Taste:

The Cream Cheese (or frosting or icing) is quite sweet, so I found it best to heat them up before enjoying them. Trust me, it makes a HUGE difference. Heating the rolls not only melts the cream cheese/frosting/icing, allowing it to coat the cinnamon rolls better but it also reduces the concentrated sugary taste, but it also makes the outer shell crispy and gives it a creamy, buttery, and aromatic flavourful interior.

Impressions:

  • must be heated (in an oven... or if you don't have one, in a microwave)
  • Cream Cheese/frosting/icing is very sweet (make sure it is melted before you eat it)
  • (after you warm it in an oven) the outside is super crispy and the inside is very creamy
  • it has the exact amount of cinnamon sugar inside

To truly savour these rolls, I highly recommend heating them, either in an oven or a microwave. This way, the cream cheese/frosting/icing is melted. Once warmed, you'll experience a delightful contrast between the super crispy exterior and the creamy interior. The cinnamon sugar is perfectly balanced, creating a delightful taste.

Cinnamon Danish Rolls

Comparison:

I hate to make comparisons, but these cinnamon rolls actually taste better than the ones I've had at Tokyo's Starbucks, which is renowned for its cinnamon rolls in Asia. Firstly, these rolls are larger than the ones offered at Starbucks. Secondly, they possess a stronger cinnamon sugar taste. And lastly, they have a wonderful texture with a crispy exterior and a warm, creamy interior, unlike Starbucks' cinnamon rolls which maintain the same texture throughout.

Verdict:

If it's not already obvious, I absolutely LOVE these cinnamon rolls! My family devoured them in just two days, which is a record considering their generous size. Even my dad, who isn't usually a fan of cinnamon, couldn't resist finishing them.

However, it's important to note that each roll contains 410 calories, which is something to consider. Despite the calorie count, if you're a fan of cinnamon rolls, I highly, highly recommend giving these a try. They strike the perfect balance with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar, and the Danish pastry provides a delightful crispy exterior and a luxuriously creamy interior.

Kirkland Borghese Luscious Lashes Volumizing Mascara review

Costco has won my heart over many many things... I'm hoping makeup will be one of them. I needed a new mascara and this was the perfect opportunity to buy one.

These come in a pack of two and cost $30.00+tax (CAN).

I have been using this for a few months and am confident enough to give a review.

features:

  • coats lashes from root to tip to lift and lengthen
  • double fibre brush loads maximum volume to curl lashes
  • flexible, lightweight formula
  • safe for contact lenses wearers and sensitive eyes
  • paraben free
  • fragrance-free
  • ophthalmologist tested

impressions:

pros:
  • easy to apply (the wand makes it easy to swipe from the root to the ends)
  • no irritations (skin or eyes)
  • very lightweight (does not weigh down my lashes and
I do not notice it and it does not distort my vision)
  • when you twist the top off, the wand slightly pops out
  • buildable but natural (doesn't give you the spider legs effect)
  • no fallout and does, not flake
  • the texture of the formula is very smooth

cons:
  • it smudges after a few hours (giving you "panda eyes")

sadly, the one con I have for this product is that it leaves me looking like a panda after 10 -ish hours of applying. So remember to check in the mirror to remove (with makeup wipes, when you are outside) any product that has smudged or somehow ended up on your skin.

I really like this product... unlike some mascaras that have an off-putting odour, this one doesn't. It dries quickly. I really enjoy using this because it doesn't cause any irritation.

Poutine @Costco (Canada) review

Costco's Poutine $4.39 + tax

Coldness is the season of being fat... It forces us to make unwise choices... But what can we do? We need to stay warm and we need comfort food like Poutine to help us...

I made my unwise choice at Costco earlier last week... I ordered Poutine... After all... I AM Canadian... And when people think of Canada, winter and food...? Poutine comes to mind...

However. As unwise as it may seem.. It was surely a delicious one =9

receipt... I didn't get the Ice Cream... I just got my share of the hot dog though :P

Impressions
  • Lots of cheese curds
  • Freshly crispy fries
  • Gravy was a little too thick

Costco is one of the best places to eat at after a long shop at their warehouse... The food items are extremely affordable and they are very tasty.

Their Poutine was no different. The Poutine was freshly made, the fries were crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside. The cheese curds were a perfect consistency, some where melted so that when you pulled out a fry the cheese would stretch, the cheese curds were also very chewy. I was slightly disappointed with the gravy as 1. Too thick and 2. There wasn't much taste to it...

It would be a really good Poutine if they "fixed" their gravy.

I will be getting this again... Hopefully not too soon though ;)

thinaddictives - Cranberry Almond review

thinaddictives - Cranberry Almond review
thinaddictives!

This year it's all about being healthy... so I will start off with a healthy snack that I came across a few months ago. These are light tasting crackers filled with Craisins (dried Cranberries) and Almonds. I found these at Costco, but I think they are available at certain grocery stores.

What I can say first is these are absolutely delicious! Beware... these are quite addictive.

nutrition information

it is a very healthy snack, look at the nutrition value! (sorry for the blurriness of this image).

These are extremely addictive... the crunchiess and the chewiness of Craisins make them fun to eat.

I think these make a perfect snack because they are healthy (check the nutrition values) but they can be quite filling.

Tipiak French Macarons review

Tipiak French Macarons review
Macarons straight from France!

Happy Macarons Day!!! How do you celebrate? I celebrate with some good Macaron and write a review about an amazing Macaron product I found in Costco's frozen aisle! These Macarons were a great deal, they were imported from France, the birthplace of Macarons! They tasted so authentic and amazingly good!

Tipiak French Macarons review
package of Tipiak Macarons

Impressions:

  • Tastes delicious (not too sweet or plain, just right)
  • Easy to prepare
  • Each flavor is unique from the rest
  • Melts in your mouth
  • Tastes very authentic

There are 4 flavors: Raspberry, Chocolate, Vanilla and Coffee. All of them are surrounded with fresh crushed almonds.

Tipiak French Macarons review
ingredients and preparation instructions

The Ingredients are quite "natural" hardly, if any, chemicals or artificial flavouring were used. However, looking at the nutrition chart had slightly scared me.. do not eat too many of these at once! I know they are very addictive but try to resist! ;)

Tipiak French Macarons review
a tray of Tipiak French Macaroons

Please remember to keep these in a frozen state in your fridge!! (This is really important!)

The instructions are very simple, just take a frozen tray out (these are sold frozen and must be kept in your fridge) and leave it in the refrigerator for 30 mins. After 30 mins they will be ready! Please make sure you don't refreeze the "extra" ones though, the instructions specifically ask that you do not thaw and refreeze.

Tipiak French Macarons review
Macarons!

Each flavours' impression
Raspberry:
  • contained real raspberry jam
  • very rich "fruit flavour"
  • to be honest, I didn't realize it was raspberry, my taste buds kept telling me "strawberry"
  • was not too sweet

Chocolate
  • very rich chocolate flavour
  • very thick chocolate paste
  • prepare to be "blasted" with French chocolateness

Vanilla
  • very creamy
  • Cream-based
  • Very light, I loved it but it didn't appear to have a strong vanilla flavour

Coffee

  • Cream-based
  • very creamy
  • not very strong Coffee taste, but it tasted really good
  • if you like strong coffee, this Macaroon might not be "strong" enough for you

I really loved these Macarons, not only are they affordable but they taste very authentic (after all, they ARE from France), these were extremely easy to prepare and tasted fresh, it was hard to tell they were frozen. I felt the Vanilla and Coffee could have a stronger taste to them though

Borghese Revitalizing Face Serum review

While shopping in Costco, this caught my eye... Borghese Revitalizing Face Serum... I thought, why would Borghese be in Costco?

In North America, Borghese does not seem to be as popular as compared to Asia, so after being "brainwashed" in Asia about Borghese, and learning about it's linked to Princess Marcella Borghese and looking at the price tag of this, I had to get a bottle to try for myself.

I haven't had a lot of chances to try serums since I am pretty new to skincare. I would say this is a "mild" serum, suitable for climates/weather which are not extremely dry or harsh on skin.

It has an oily feel when you apply the serum on your face, but after it has been absorbed it becomes matte. The oiliness is good since you can spread the product on your face easier, unfortunately, I find the pump it not very durable, after using it for over a month, it needs to be pulled back up before pumping again, or you can't get enough product.

Costco - Markham + 14th discrimination

65 Kirkham Dr
Markham, ON L3S 0A9
(905) 201-3500

There are no pictures this time, I am very frustrated. I can't believe I experienced racism in Canada. At least not by someone who can be pretty much discriminated against herself (I think she was Tamil)

Time: 6:00 (January 31, 2013)
Location: 65 Kirkham Dr
Markham, ON L3S 0A9
Booth: Campbell's Soup (I think the product was some kind of vegetable Campbell's "orange looking" soup)
Person: a middle aged women who is Indian/Tamil.

For those who haven't been to any Costco, they have little booths where they would give some food samples (since at Costco you need to buy your food in bulk form, it is good to know what it tastes like before you make a purchase).

So the story:
So I was walking around Costco (the one located at 65 Kirkham Dr) and came across a few food booths. There was a line for Campbell's Soup (which claims it is a vegan soup). My mom and I lined up showing interest in the product. My mom was in line first and I was behind, followed by a Caucasian girl. When it was my mom's turn, we waited for the lady to give her her soup sample, the lady just gave my mom half portion and claimed there were no more samples and told me to leave, just as I took a step back, she waved for the Caucasian girl (who was behind me in that line) to get some samples. My reaction: didn't she just say there wasn't any left? As I watched her, she poured a full portion of soup for the Caucasian girl.

How ridiculous! Totally outrageous! How can we be treated like this in Canada? A country who claims to be multiculturalism? I felt so humiliated and totally discriminated against.

I have always loved shopping at Costco (specifically this Costco), however after this bad experience, I can hardly bring myself to coming back to shopping at this store without feeling I might be discriminated against.

I might be naive, but I hope someone from the management at Costco sees this post and does some justice!

If you have had similar experiences, please feel free to write them in the comments below!

Creme Brulee from Costco review

I finally found some Creme Brulee!! In Costco! now I'm going to eat it all!! hahaha

This creme Brulee is quite good, lives up to those creme Brulees served in most places. They also provide glass rumpkins(?) along with a packet of brown sugar (for every creme brulee) so you can recreate that hard caramel on top (which makes a creme brulee a creme Brulee).

I hope I was able to help those who were searching hard.
